ACLU Motion Filed in Homeless Sweeps: Kristin Holland
The first time they tried to make the point, Hawaii’s ACLU was turned away by a judge. Now the organization says it has new evidence that Honolulu is taking and throwing away the personal belongings of homeless people after moving them out of urban encampments. The ACLU has again filed a lawsuit. Kristin Holland is one of the lawyers working on the Martin v. City and County of Honolulu case and she joined The Conversation to tell us why the ACLU is challenging the immediate seizure and destruction of property under the Sidewalk Nuisance and Stored Property Ordinances.

Mid-Pacific’s Hybrid Orchestra: Elton Masaki
Time was, not that long ago, when electric violins were not likely to be heard in a school orchestra. The traditional notion of the orchestra is all about the resonance of strings in a wooden enclosure, and of course, electric instruments generate their sounds very differently… but Elton Masaki, orchestra director at Mid-Pacific, has found some surprising ways to make them blend. He joined the show to tell us more about Mid Pacific’s Hybrid Orchestra, which has its Christmas concert coming up on December 12th at Bakken Auditorium on the Mid-Pacific campus.

State Matching Program: Alvin Onaka
As was reported by KHON last week, benefits for the living are still being paid to the dead, and a few agencies have been checking to see whether someone receiving a pension, a property tax credit, or other benefit is really alive. With a state program to find out and millions of tax payer dollars at stake that’s often funneled through direct deposit, we wanted to know why many agencies aren’t mandated to check each month. Alvin Onaka is the state registrar and chief of the Office of Health Status Monitoring and he joined the show to tell us more about the state’s matching program.

In a really effective theater company, you get back as much as you put in, and if theater becomes a part of you, the lessons you learn will stay with you forever. That’s how it has worked for Jarren Amian, a youth leader for Farrington High School’s T-Shirt Theatre, whose new production is Balance. He has come back to school to work on the show, and he joined The Conversation to tell us about it. Balance will be performed at the Kaimuki High School Auditorium Thursday, November 12th at 7:30 pm and Sunday, November 15th at 4:30 pm. Admission is free.
