Oh those beautiful and alluring...snails...Last week during Celebration 2014, you heard a lot about Hawaii tree snails...specifically why HECO could not immediately get in to fix power lines that were fueling our Mt. Kaala transmitter. It came down to protection of those jewels of the forest...but not entirely as we had been led to believe...that it was because it was mating season.  We heard from David Sischo - the Snail Extinction Prevention Program Coordinator for the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife Native Invertebrate Program.

Earthquakes Talk: Paul Okubo

What is the likelihood of a powerful earthquake in Hawaii – magnitude 6.0 or greater? More than you think. It has happened more than thirty times since they first started being recorded in 1868. In that year, an earthquake estimated at 7.9 was reported. We probably have a vague idea of what those Richter Scale numbers mean from news reports, but we have a chance to dig a little deeper this morning by talking with USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory seismologist Paul Okubo.  He’ll speak tonight at UH-Hilo about Hawaii’s history of destructive earthquakes and what we can do to prepare for the next big earthquake.

If you’ve tried to learn more about domestic violence in Hawaii, you’ve likely been able to get statistics about the state as a whole, but finding statistics about domestic violence within Hawaii’s military, and how those families find help, perhaps not so much. This week, Senator Mazie Hirono will chair her first Senate Judiciary Committee field hearing to find out how families access support. It coincides with “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” and the 20th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act.

The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears has been around since the 1830’s, and for all the years since then, we have accepted Goldi’s version of event. But wait a minute: who goes into somebody’s house, eats their porridge, and takes a nap in their bed?  The Maui "OnSTAGE" Youth Theater production of The Trial of Goldilocks, a comedic play for kids, asks us to take a hard look at the events of that fateful day, and the director, Alexis Dascoulias, tells us more.

Intro Music: Quite Spectacular by Hint

Outro Music: Goldilocks by Childrens DJ’s
