You may remember that in July UH M?noa Chancellor Tom Apple was fired, much to the upset from the school’s students and faculty Senate. Since then, the UH M?noa Graduate Student Organization has been fighting to get him back. The group says it’s angered over the lack of transparency, accountability, and shared governance at the University of Hawai'i. Late last week, the GSO General Assembly approved two resolutions expressing a vote of no confidence in University President David Lassner and the Board of Regents. Today the GSO will talk more about that vote and GSO president Michelle Tigchelaar will be there.

Innovative Methods of Converting Food Wastes: Dr. Samir Khanal
How do you take a lot of the food waste usually destined for landfills and make energy instead? We’ve talked on this program about action campaigns at Pearl City High School and on some college campuses to decrease food waste. Now a new partnership between the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources ’s Bioenergy and Environment Research Group and bioconversion company, ProtaCulture, want to innovate the waste to energy process. Together, they are one of 17 grantees from the nonprofit Energy Excelerator. Biological engineering professor Samir Kumar Khanal is leading the groups’ effort and he joined the show via phone to give us an update on the status of the project. Dr. Khanal is an Associate Professor of Biological Engineering at the UH M?noa and Collaborating Professor at Iowa State University. His research focuses on biomass-to-advanced fuels, anaerobic digestion, resource recovery from wastes/residues and environmental biotechnology.
