Kanikapila Sunday with Derrick Malama - October 8, 2017

Kanikapila Sunday features three hours of Great Hawaiian Music, including contemporary, traditional and hapa haole songs. You'll also hear slack key guitar and `ukulele instrumentals. Plus, the Kanikapila Sunday Classic! Tune in every Sunday with host Derrick Malama from 1:00-4:00 PM Hawai`i Time on HPR-1.

Mahalo nui for your tremendous support during Hawai?i Public Radio's Fall Fund Drive. We met our goal just before 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6. During the ten days of the drive, both HPR-1 and HPR-2 raised nearly $773,000 dollars. There were over 3400 donors and 900 of them were new members!

The new CD 'N? Leo Kau?i?Hawai?i – The Beautiful Sounds of Hawai?i,' features memorable Hawaiian and Hapa-Haole melodies by Hawai?i?s finest entertainers and musicians.  Mark Yamanaka performs 'Laupahoehoe Hula' from the CD in our first hour.

Plus, enjoy music from Raiatea Helm, Keali`i Reichel, Olomana, Napua, Weldon Kekauoha, Israel Kamakawiwo`ole, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Kawika Kahiapo, and Nathan Aweau.

Chad Takatsugi opens up Hour Two with a song in praise of the Hokule`a. You'll also hear Shawn & Lehua, Anthony Pfluke, Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, Teresa Bright, Cyril Pahinui, Darlene Ahuna, Komakakino, Ku`uipo Kumukahi, and Keauhou.

Hoku Zuttermeister kicks off Hour Three with a song honoring Ni`ihau. In addition, listen to tunes from Amy Hanaiali`i, Kawai Cockett, a group from Kona called Mauka Soul, Kupaoa, Darren Benitez, Kuana Torres Kahele, and a Kanikapila Sunday Classic from Keola Beamer.

Playing for Change presents this ?Song Across Hawai?i? collaboration with Hawaiian nonprofit @Mana Maoli, filmed across many breathtaking Hawaii locations as part of their #ManaMele project, which features a Music & Multimedia Academy and Solar Mobile Studio with programs in more than a dozen schools.
