The Navy says it will ask the public how it should use a fuel storage facility in the hills above Pearl Harbor once it has finished draining petroleum from its massive storage tanks. The Navy says it's asking the state Department of Health for permission to leave the tanks inside the hillside where they were built.

At Honolulu's federal courthouse, military families have been detailing their lives and medical ailments since being exposed to jet fuel from the Navy's Red Hill storage facility in 2021. The federal government has already admitted responsibility for the leaks, but now it's arguing the contamination was not enough to get people sick. HPR's Mark Ladao has more.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency spokesperson Alejandro Diaz shares how the EPA is providing support to the state and the military during this water contamination crisis. Diaz said the EPA believes the Navy has taken "needed actions to respond to the incident, including providing alternative drinking water sources."

The permit allows the Navy to flush up to 5 million gallons a day from the shaft into filter units that would eliminate fuel contaminants before it is discharged into the waterway.
