UH Maui Nursing Students Set Up Vaccination Clinic

Students from the University of Hawaii Maui College Nursing Program will administer COVID-19 vaccines to Maui's Filipino community on May 1.

Up to 40 nursing students - who are able to speak various Filipino dialects - will gather at the Binhi At Ani Filipino Community Center in Kahului to give the two-dose Moderna vaccine.

The clinic is open to anyone regardless of their insurance coverage, as long as the patient brings an ID.

Nursing student Lennel Joy Alvarez and her instructor Feny Sales are helping to coordinate the vaccination clinic.

She noticed how many people in the Filipino community had difficulty signing up for vaccinations online due to language barriers.

"We wanted to make sure that the right information is getting out, and all the education that we put out there is being told and taught to the Filipino community," Alvarez said. "And I knew that stationing the clinic at somewhere most everyone knew would be a great way to start. I really like what I'm doing, though it has a lot of steps. And knowing that my community needs the correct information and needs the help, I'm willing to do this all over again and help wherever I can."

The vaccinations will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 1. Walk-ins are welcome.
