Kauai officials yesterday reported three new cases on the island, two related to travel, including one who tested negative in a pre-flight test and then tested positive. The continuing increase in cases on the island could trigger more restrictions under the county's reopening plan.
All three cases are Kauai male residents. The source of infection for the third case is under investigation but he has been hospitalized, the mayor's office said in a news release.
Kauai County now has 17 active cases, two who are hospitalized. Fifty-one others are in quarantine, monitored by the state Department of Health.
The county has now had 91 cases, including one that is probable and eight that were confirmed positive based on out-of-state or off-island tests but only reported after their arrival on Kauai.
Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami has called for changes to the state Safe Travels program that would require passengers to get their results from their pre-travel tests before they arrive in the islands.
The daily average case count over a week period is now approaching two, which would trigger a move to the county's Tier 3 stage and more restrictions, including a limit on indoor and outdoor gatherings to 10.
Free surge testing has been scheduled every Sunday through the end of 2020 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Today's testing will be at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex, Nov. 22 at the Hanapepe Stadium and Nov. 29 at the Vidinha Stadium.
