Today our Off the Road series welcomes guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who spoke with HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence remotely from his home in the Nashville area.

Kenny, with all touring and most live music halted, has recently released his first-ever live DVD, also released as a live album, called Straight To You Live. The guitar icon was in between tours for the project when the pandemic put the road plans on hold for now.

In addition to details on the European concert the release is based around, he shared how he had a surgery scheduled during the first days of the pandemic and what that unusual experience was like, as well as providing insight into the ways artists have dealt with the uncertainty of upcoming tour dates, offering perspective on how booking agents and artists manage making plans during the crisis, which has revised the way tours and concerts are being booked, often as tentative events.

Kenny also paid tribute to one of the musical luminaries lost to the virus, Ellis Marsalis, and connected the dots to musicians he’s been associated with, who, in some cases, like Ellis, came into his life due to his father, whose own passion for music and role as a sometime concert promoter brought him together with other musical legends we’ll hear about tomorrow.
