Last semester,  'Aikahi Elementary got creative in order to bring people back to campus: they constructed outdoor classrooms to help protect both staff and students. Principal Keoki Fraser checks in to tell us how these structures are holding up in Oahu's high winds and frequent rains, as well as share a few other ways the school has adapted.

New president takes charge at Maryknoll School

Maryknoll School in Honolulu has a new president — and she has a long history with the school. Shana Tong stepped up to serve as the interim head of school after the previous president, Perry Martin, departed this past summer. Tong’s very familiar with the school — she attended Maryknoll from kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated in 1983. She also worked as a teacher and principal at the school for 30 years, and was most recently the Vice President of Academic Affairs. She spoke with HPR’s Jason Ubay about school operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, including an update on theirChinese immersion program.

Reality Check: Can Landlord-Tenant Mediation Stave Off Mass Evictions?

Lawmakers are assessing how to avoid a mass eviction episode in the event that the eviction moratorium is lifted. One solution on the table is mandatory landlord-tenant mediation. You can read Anita Hofschneider's full story at civilbeat.org.

Combatting global disinformation

Recently, the East-West Center held a webinar featuring international experts on disinformation and conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are nothing new, but experts have noted that as the pandemic has spread, a parallel "infodemic" of disinformation has found new audiences. HPR's Noe Tanigawa joins us with the debrief.

Dr. Sophie Whoriskey joins us from the Marine Mammal Center to share some concerning news: a monk seal was admitted to their clinic with bite marks on its neck that appear to be from a dog. Whoriskey discusses the importance of keeping dogs leased while on beaches in the presence of other wildlife.

The Marine Mammal Center asks residents and visitors to report all monk seal sightings to one of the following hotlines:

Hawai'i Island: 1-808-987-0765
Statewide: 1-888-256-9840
