After taking a short break from our HPR + HIFF collaboration shows, we're back at it tonight with episode 4 featuring selections by local filmmaker, Bradley Tangonan. I was lucky enough to meet Brad at a recent media maker's summit, where he asked an insightful question at a rather mismatched panel (in my opinion) on place-based storytelling. While I was stewing in my own irritation at the panel, Brad's question was a breath of fresh air, and my friend Keola introduced us after the panel was over and I got to thank him for the depth of his question.
Born on O?ahu, Bradley moved to California after high school to earn a degree in molecular biology before deciding to pursue his lifelong love for film and narrative storytelling. Self-taught in digital filmmaking and editing, he worked with creative agencies in LA before moving to New York, where he is based now. He comes home to Hawai?i often to direct passion projects and has played at the Hawai?i International Film Festival numerous times. His recent short, "Voices Of The Forest" follows kumu hula Kau?i Kanaka?ole as she prepares her h?lau for a sunrise ceremony at Pu?u Ka?uiki in H?na, Maui. It aired before Lisette Flanary's feature documentary, "Tokyo Hula."
Brad's selections for tonight's show are inspired by the spirit of high school, "for pining, infatuation, rejection, making out, and for the long drive home after a breakup." Wow, Brad, just...wow.
