Hawaiʻi Island lawmakers want an online database that shows water availability

Hawaiʻi Island lawmakers want the public to have more information about water resources.

The Hawaiʻi County Council advanced Resolution 137-25 on Tuesday that called on the county Department of Water Supply to create an online system that shows the amount of available water islandwide.

It would also include information on existing developer agreements that may affect water availability.

The resolution contends that data is key to public trust and planning efforts.

Representatives from the water department told council members during a committee hearing that they could develop a system within the year.

Meanwhile, residents of North Kona and South Kohala have been asked by the department to reduce their water consumption by 10% due to rainfall shortages and operational issues with the Waimea well.
