Samples from the Navy’s water system around Pearl Harbor showing evidence of a chemical solvent were reported in error by a laboratory, the Navy said.

The samples were collected from fire hydrants in eight areas, and were part of extensive testing taking place after jet fuel contaminated the Navy’s drinking water.

The Navy says it resampled the locations where the solvent BCEE was reported, and the results showed no indication of the chemical.

The Interagency Drinking Water System team, which is overseeing the testing, determined after consulting with the testing laboratory that the initial report of BCEE was a false positive.

Besides its use as a solvent, BCEE is also used to make pesticides and other chemicals.
