Paradise Beverages fined $75,000 for polluting Waiawa Stream

Local distributor Paradise Beverages says it has taken steps to prevent pollutants from flowing into Waiawa Stream on Oʻahu.

The company was fined $75,000 by the state Department of Health after officials documented the discharges in November of last year.

The state says the pollutants were traced back to Paradise Beverages’ Waipio distribution facility.

Besides the fine, the company was ordered by the state to build containment measures for its beverage disposal area.

A statement from John Erickson, company president and general manager, said the pollutants were the result of its can-crushing operations for product not suitable for sale.

Erickson says the company has identified areas to improve and has implemented, or is in the process of implementing, safety measures to ensure the discharges are not repeated.
