Honolulu-based seafood company fined for violating labor laws

Molly Solomon/HPR

The U.S. Department of Labor has recovered more than $100,000 in back wages and damages for 33 employees at a local seafood company after it did not properly pay them for overtime wages.

Honolulu-based United Fishing Agency buys and sells seafood to markets and restaurants in the state.

The labor department found that the company failed to include bonuses in its employees’ overtime pay. It says United Fishing Agency should have included the bonuses in the overtime wages because it awarded the bonuses to promote productivity.

The labor department also said the company did not keep accurate payroll records.

An investigation found that United Fishing Agency owed the workers nearly $60,000 in unpaid overtime wages and an equal amount in liquidated damages.

The company was also fined nearly $15,000 in penalties.
