The Polynesian Voyaging Society is postponing its next journey until Spring 2023 due to ongoing pandemic uncertainties.

The Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia were scheduled to depart Alaska in April as part of the Moananuiākea Voyage.

The canoes and their crews were set to circumnavigate the Pacific Ocean in a 42-month, 41,000-mile journey to 46 countries and archipelagoes, 100 Indigenous territories and 345 ports.

Despite the delay, the society will launch its web-based educational and storytelling campaign this spring called Wa’a Honua – or Canoe for the Earth.

Our canoes are classrooms for the earth and through technology and partnerships we can still commit to our educational campaign, which aims to inspire people to action and to make good choices for our oceans and the world," PVS CEO Nainoa Thompson said.
