Repairs to the USS Arizona Memorial shoreside dock begin Wednesday after staff members at Pearl Harbor were alerted to an issue over the weekend.

A Navy engineering crew assessed the USS Arizona Memorial site Tuesday and decided to remove the damaged dock ramp via crane and repair it at its off-site facility.

Once the repairs are completed, the dock ramp will be re-installed and tested. Operations will resume when the National Park Service and U.S. Navy deem conditions safe enough for boats to use it. There is no estimated reopening date.

Staff members at Pearl Harbor were alerted to an issue with the dock on Sunday and suspended tours to the memorial.

The site is among the most visited in Hawaiʻi, and pays homage to the nearly 1,200 lives lost on the USS Arizona in the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

The memorial was closed for 15 months after cracks were found on the dock in 2018. The repair project cost more than $2.1 million.

It was closed again in September for two weeks for emergency safety repairs.

While tours to the Arizona Memorial have been suspended, the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center grounds, museums and park film are still accessible.
