Acting governor signs second emergency proclamation for Maui drought relief

Casey Harlow / HPR

Acting Gov. Clare Connors has signed an emergency proclamation that provides relief from drought conditions on Maui County.

Rainfall, stream flow and ground water levels in Maui County — which also includes Molokaʻi and Lanaʻi — have been significantly below normal since March 2019.The proclamation aims to control the large number of axis deer which have sought food and water in agricultural and developed areas.

Gov. David Ige first issued an emergency proclamation on January 27 earlier this year, but it expired within 60 days. The current proclamation runs through January 7, 2022.

Ige is currently in Glasgow, Scotland attending the COP26 Climate Change Conference.
