University of Hawaiʻi football fans can't yet attend home games

Gov. David Ige says the time will come for University of Hawaiʻi football fans to attend home games, but that time hasn’t arrived yet.

Last Thursday, State House Speaker Scott Saiki wrote a letter to Ige asking for some fans to be allowed to attend the game against Fresno State on Saturday — the Rainbow Warriors won 27-24.

The request was turned down, but Ige says his administration is evaluating the situation.

"As we see the case counts drop and the conditions for health care improve, we'll be working with the university to be able to bring spectators back to football games," Ige said.

The next home game is on Oct. 23 against New Mexico State.

Also last week, Ige said he would extend emergency orders requiring masks and regulating travel amid ongoing concerns about high numbers of COVID-19 infections. The latest extension will last until at least the end of November.
