To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Southwest Airlines announced a new prize of 50 round-trip tickets to encourage more Hawai‘i residents to get vaccinated

Gov. David Ige last week proclaimed June as #HIGotVaccinated month, unveiling giveaway prizes and other incentives to encourage residents to get the coronavirus vaccine. Among the prizes are a trip for two to Las Vegas, a $6,000 gift card to Zippy’s and a yearlong car lease from Autosource.

Southwest Airlines is a partner and initially gave away eight round-trip tickets for two.

Airline vice president Andrew Watterson announced Thursday they were upping their giveaway to coincide with their special anniversary.

"We’re going to, next week, celebrate our 50th anniversary," he said. "We’re here in the 50th state, so it only makes sense then that we donate 50 roundtrips to #HIGotVaccinated for people to win as the giveaway to wherever they’d like on Southwest Airlines.

"Now you could go neighbor island, but our fares are pretty cheap. So I’d recommend using it to go to Vegas or somewhere else on the mainland," Watterson said.

Watterson estimates a round-trip ticket to the mainland is valued at $400.
