Honolulu City Council Special Election Deadline On Saturday Fast Approaching

Casey Harlow

Time is running out for voters in the Honolulu City Council District 4 to cast their ballots in the contentious special election between Trevor Ozawa and Tommy Waters.

Mail ballots must arrive by Saturday 6 p.m. to be counted.

Last November, 22 votes separated incumbent Ozawa from Waters. Waters challenged the results, calling for a recount and contending that mistakes were made by the City Clerk's Office that administers Honolulu elections.

The state Supreme Court heard arguments in the case earlier this year and ordered a special election for the district.

Last month, the City Clerk’s Office mailed about 60,000 ballots to registered voters in East Honolulu. As of Tuesday afternoon, elections officials had received about 29,785 mail ballots and counted 301 voters who voted in person at Honolulu Hale.

"If you haven’t mailed in your ballot yet, please do so as soon as possible," said Rex Quidilla, elections administrator, on Tuesday.

Voters can also drop off their ballots at Honolulu Hale between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. In-person voting is available from  8 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Friday and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday when voting closes.

If you have any questions, you can call the City Clerk’s Office at 768-3800.
