Preserving Honouliuli: An Internment Camp Almost Forgotten
The story of Honouliuli Internment Camp nearly vanished. The site remained hidden from view in an Oahu gulch for nearly 60 years, until it was re-discovered by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii in 2002. Now it’s under consideration to be designated as a national monument or historic site. It’s on private land owned by Monsanto. HPR’s Molly Solomon got a private tour and has this report.
The National Park Service recently wrapped up a series of public meetings across the islands. They’ll be holding a virtual one online next Tuesday. More information is available here.
