Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR. Each Friday afternoon, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization or event in the community that offers assistance to the disabled and other folks in need with All Things Considered local host Dave Lawrence. This week we’re learning about the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawai'i. This Sunday evening, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawai`i’s annual “Share A Night” gala is happening at the Sheraton Waikiki. Featuring food, live and silent auctions, entertainment and families who've benefited from their services. Joining us at HPR is Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawai'i Public Relations Manager Gene Davis.
Honolulu’s two Ronald McDonald Houses are in continual operation 24-hours, 365-days–a–year. According to their website, each is a “home-away-from-home” for families that must come to the Honolulu area seeking specialized medical treatments for their children’s catastrophic illnesses. Guest families come from many different cultures throughout the Pacific Basin. Their site also notes just over three-fourths of the families served come from islands around the state other than the City and County of Honolulu. Most from out of state originate from Guam and other Pacific Rim locations.
