Second Saturday at the Garden: Pollinators and more!

Second Saturday at the Garden: Pollinators and more!

Join the Oahu Master Gardeners and Urban Garden Center (UGC) experts for a morning of exciting activities!

Fun family activities will be available throughout the morning: bee keeper display, honey extraction and tasting, pot a plant to take home, solitary bee house activity, spin game, native insects, and pollinator plant sale. Researchers from the Hawaii Invertebrate Program, DLNR/DOFAW, will be on hand to talk about native insects such as the Kamehameha butterfly, yellow-face bees, and damselflies.

Giant pumpkin, tomato and sunflowers will be on display for the UH 4-H Giant Fruit and Vegetable Contest. Don’t miss the award ceremony at 10:30 am!

Workshops include a bucket composting how-to demonstration, collecting and saving seeds from your garden, tree grafting demonstration, rain barrel construction to help the Oahu water conservation effort, and a mini-workshop on avocados for the home garden to learn about avocado varieties, fertilizing, pests, pruning, and harvesting.

Tours of the Honolulu Rose Society Gardens will be held every half hour. Or relax with a presentation by the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) team at 9:30 am. Master Gardeners will be available for consultation on gardening topics. CTAHR seeds and fruit fly lures will be for sale.
