Practical Agriculture for Hāmākua Medicinal Plants of Hawai’i with David Bruce Leonard of Earth Medicine Institute

Practical Agriculture for Hāmākua Medicinal Plants of Hawai’i with David Bruce Leonard of Earth Medicine Institute Thursday, July 22nd, 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM Zoom - Register to get the address Flyer description: Tropical and Subtropical garden weeds are a major underutilized resource in Hawaiʻi nei. Come learn how to use these volunteers in meals and medicines. What’s this class about? Mystery plants are always popping up in our backyards and gardens. We label them as “weeds” but is it possible some of them may actually have uses beyond the compost? ʻUhaloa tea can improve respiratory function, honohono grass can help a sore throat, while pohe kula(shown on flyer) is great for skin, most of these plants have more than a few uses. So, before you yank them out, discover if these volunteers could have edible or medicinal value and turn “pulling weeds” into “harvesting medicine”. Have your weeds ready for the class and we can have a look to see what useful things are being removed from your yards and gardens. Who is David Bruce Leonard? David has studied traditional medicines with healers in Asia, North and South America, and Hawai’i. With a Master’s Degree in traditional Chinese medicine, he has a working knowledge of more than 400 traditional Hawaiian, Chinese, and Western plants. A deep ecologist and Hawaiian plant specialist, he has been a student of Hawaiian medicine under Kahu Kawika Ka’alakea, Kaipo Kaneakua, and Na Kupuna ‘O Hawai’i since 1992. Author of “Medicine at Your Feet: Healing Plants of the Hawaiian Kingdom” and “Wild Wisdom: Listening to Heart of Nature”, David is an expert on the medicinal plants of the tropics. He studies, lectures, and teaches on cross-cultural uses of plant medicines, environmental concerns, traditional plant gathering practices, and pragmatic approaches to health care. He is known for his offbeat sense of humor. He is often seen in Hawaiian rainforests wearing his favorite trash bag as a raincoat. Check out David’s website to learn more: www.mindfullivinggroup.org
