Mana for Maui: Music, Dance, Prayer

Mana for Maui: Music, Dance, Prayer
On Saturday, September 16th, 2023, from 4-10pm, MAnaFest, Lokahi Chorus, and Hawaiian Sanctuary Retreat Center are co-hosting “Mana for Maui,” a benefit concert for families affected by the wildfires in Maui. Over 20 musicians, Hawaiian elders, painters, dancers, and a DJ are donating their time and energy to the cause. Aid will go directly to families affected by the Maui fire as well as a scholarship program for Lahaina kids to get musical instruments and lessons.
Performers include Sam Frampton of Maui, Robyn Chance (with live painting and Zouk dance performances), prayers and talks by Uncle Kaliko and Harry Jim, DJ Infinite Canopy, and music by Ydine, Kelly Hyde, Lehua, Hawaiian musicians Malu & Goldawn, Zahira, Gabby Holt, and Holy Motherfunk.
Family activities will be offered, including face painting, lei making to send to Maui, and a traditional Hawaiian Imu roast. Participants are asked to give a $22-33 donation, with all proceeds going to affected families in Maui.
Hawaiian Sanctuary is located at 13-3194 Pahoa-Kalapana Road. Sponsors include Big Island Booch. The event is being co-produced by MAnafest (a women-centered conscious music festival) and the Lokahi Chorus (which offers community singing classes and live performances).
Hope Medford, former drummer of Nahko & Medicine for the People and co-producer of MAnaFest music festival, said, “We are gathering to stand in solidarity with Maui and the families who have lost their loved ones. We are grateful to come together, as a united community, making prayers and raising money for those affected. Please join us for a special evening of music, dance, art, prayers and making lei.”
Jonah Baker, current leader of the singing group Lokahi Chorus, said, “We’re pleased to be able to offer a traditional Hawaiian Imu roast, with meat and vegetarian options, by donation for all attendees.”
Steve Lund, co-founder of Hawaiian Sanctuary, said, “I’m honored to support this worthy cause and also have opened up Hawaiian Sanctuary at reduced rates for Maui refugees for all our services and rentals.”
