9th Annual Makahiki Ma Kapolei Event
9th Annual Makahiki Ma Kapolei Event
Kapolei, Hawaiʻi — January 31, 2026 — Ulu A‘e Learning Center invites the community to gather for the 9th Annual Makahiki Ma Kapolei, a free, family-friendly cultural celebration honoring the Makahiki season through traditional Hawaiian games, music and workshops. The event will be held Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 4:00–6:30 p.m. at the pā hula at Puʻuokapolei (1077 Manawai Street, Kapolei).
Makahiki Ma Kapolei is the only open Makahiki event in the ʻEwa moku where the public can actively participate in traditional Hawaiian games at a cultural site during the Makahiki season. Rooted in practices that celebrate abundance, peace, and community well-being, the event invites participants of all ages to learn, play, and reconnect to culture—not as spectators, but as active participants. The event typically draws 200–300 attendees, with the majority identifying as Native Hawaiian.
The evening will feature traditional games such as ulu maika, moa pahe‘e, hukihuki, haka moa, ʻōʻō ihe and more, along with a pū‘ohe workshop, a kōnane tournament, Hawaiian music, and a cultural opening led by Ulu A‘e haumāna. Attendees can also enjoy a free dinner bowl (while supplies last), ʻolena boosters, wai nīoi, and ʻawa.
“Makahiki Ma Kapolei creates space for families to slow down, reconnect, and experience the joy of playful competition through our traditions,” said Mikiʻala Lidstone, Executive Director of Ulu A‘e Learning Center. “These practices carry ʻike, values, and lessons that strengthen our relationships with one another and with ʻāina.”
The event provides a welcoming and supportive environment for participants of all abilities and is made possible through the support of community partners and sponsors, including the Office of Hawaiian Affairs whose support helps provide access for families across West Oʻahu.
