Blangiardi and city officials to update the public on cleanup efforts in Chinatown

The Blangiardi Administration will update the public on progress in cleaning up and making Honolulu’s Chinatown safer during a virtual meeting Wednesday.

Last February Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi pledged to revitalize Chinatown by cleaning it up and improving security.

One recent development has sparked cheers from many Chinatown businesses and residents — the River of Life Mission's agreement to move its meal service for the homeless away from Pauahi Street.

Since July last year, increased policing in Chinatown has resulted in thousands of warnings and citations and 143 arrests in the area.

Weed and Seed is at work, attempting to keep problem individuals from returning to the neighborhood.

In addition, longer term solutions are in progress, including the city's new CORE program, Crisis Outreach Response and Engagement. It provides a social service alternative to law enforcement when homeless complaints come in.

Looking ahead, improvements to Kekaulike Mall are among developments expected this summer.

The update from the mayor and city officials takes place Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. You can find links for the virtual meeting by clicking here.
