2018 Legislative Season Wrap-up

Each year’s legislative session carries with it the hopes of a great many people, with the promise that pressing issues will be addressed and solutions created -- and inevitably, each session has its successes and its disappointments.

Disappointments from 2018 Legislative Season

It’s the final day of the 2018 legislative session at the State Capitol.   After months of debate and lobbying, 222 of the 2260 bills introduced have made it to the Governor’s desk, which left many disappointed stakeholders.

CORRECTION: 5/3/18.  An earlier version misstated the number of bills that made it to the Governor's desk this session.

Farm Tour Flooding

Farmers were hit hard by the last month’s Friday the 13th flooding -- and not only on Kauai. Some Oahu farms were set to be part of a farm tour this weekend. Horses and chickens were on the original farm tour list, but there had to be some reshuffling.

Hawaiian Bird Symphony

We no longer hear the songs of Hawaii’s native birds, unless we’re very lucky and very far from human influence; sadly, most of their songs are gone for good…  which is why composer Takuma Itoh, biologist Melissa Price, and their team have created "Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds" soon to be performed by the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.

Innovative Bike Designs

Imua Kakou Trykes is a non-profit that builds adaptive bicycles for people with disabilities. The payback to volunteers is giving youngsters the freedom of movement in a way that able-bodied people may take for granted.
