John Kirby, the Defense Department's chief spokesperson, spoke with The Conversation Tuesday morning about the decision to shut down the Red Hill underground fuel storage facility. HPR has learned that Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III had planned a trip to Hawaiʻi but the tensions in Europe took priority.

When asked about accountability for the fuel contaminated tap water, Kirby said he did not want to get ahead of the multiple investigations that are underway. Same with what happens to any future use of the Red Hill facility. The department said it is not there yet.

This interview aired on The Conversation on March 8, 2022. The Conversation airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.
