Manu Minute: 'Amakihi, The Forager

With over 850,000 individual birds on Hawai'i island, the 'amakihi are among our most common honeycreeper species. Still, a sighting of this yellow singer is a treat for any birdwatcher.

WAILUKU — The Hawaii Department of Health notified a Maui neighborhood of a suspected case of a mosquito-borne illness near their residences, officials said.

Mosquito-borne illnesses are a concern in various parts of the world. They range from dengue and West Nile virus to yellow fever. Two other diseases are a current worry in a pair of Asian capitols. HPR’s Bill Dorman has more in today’s Asia Minute.

More than a thousand people in the Indian capital of New Delhi have come down with chikungunya this summer.  That’s a virus that is spread by mosquitoes.  It attacks the joints—and can cause high fever.

Although there haven’t been any recent outbreaks of dengue fever … the threat of the Zika virus is still making the news. 

So the Hawai‘i State Department of Health is re-launching its “Fight the Bite” educational campaign about preventing mosquito borne disease.  The department is putting up educational posters in airports, in busses, and will soon be running a series of ads on TV and radio.

Officials are urging the public to take the same precautions that were taken for dengue fever.  Anna Koethe is the Public Health Information Coordinator with the DOH.
