The Conversation: Community Growers Urge Residents To Plant Seeds

This pandemic has turned lots of people’s attention down to earth. Newfound gardeners have emerged and there has been a run on seeds, soil and all things related to growing food at home. Today we talk about seeds; taking stock of the state of seeds and learning about groups in our community who are producing seed to sell and grow.

Joining our discussion today:

Big Island resident Nancy Redfeather. She has over 40 years of home gardening experience and has been saving seed at her  family farm, Kawanui Farm, since 1998. She’s an educator, gardener, and seed grower for the Hawai’i Seed Growers Network.  For a decade she worked at The Kohala Center creating educational programs, professional development, and curriculum for Hawaii’s teachers and school gardens.

Jay Bost, has been fascinated with seeds for some  20 years. He’s trained and worked in seed production and plant breeding in addition to food production. He has worked with the Culinary Breeding Network, visited the World Vegetable Center. Bost is a farm coach with GoFarm Hawaii, training a new generation of growers on Oahu in Waimanalo.

Glenn Tevesis a seed grower who’s been involved in the Hawaii Public Seed Initiative and Hawaii Seed Growers Network since its inception. He’s a County Extension Agent with the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources on the island of Molokai and has served in this position for 39 years.
