The Conversation: Hawaii Premier Racing Events

The world of premier sporting events has been turned upside down during this global health crisis. Today we sit down with organizers of the Honolulu Marathon, the Honolulu Century Ride, and the Waikiki Roughwater Swim.

What will foot races, rides, and swims look like as we move through this next phase of COVID Recovery? Our guests today are:

  • Jim Barahal, president and CEO of the Honolulu Marathon. Physician with Doctors on Call .  He made the call to cancel the Hapalua Half Marathon in March and is planning for the Honolulu Marathon with revised operations.

  • Lori McCarney, Executive Director of the Hawaii Bicycling League formerly with Biki Bikes. The non-profit Hawaii Bicycling League, cancelled the 10th Annual Zach’s Ride In Paradise and fundraising in Zach’s memory moved virtual. It has prepared sanitation and distancing protocols for the Honolulu Century Ride in the hope the ride on September 27 will be allowed to take place.

  • Stefan Reinke, President of the Waikiki Rough Water Swim Committee. The 51st Waikiki Roughwater Swim scheduled for September 7, 2020 was cancelled though the Double Roughwater race was not. He is a long time chanel swimmer  here in the islands.  He’s also a partner with the law firm Lyons, Brandt, Cook & Hiramatsu. He's been involved in swimming, running cycling and triathlon events for over 30 years as a participant, volunteer, coach and organizer.

We invite you to contact the Talkback Line and record your thoughts about about the show or if you have an idea to help the organizers. That number  to call is 808-792-8217.
