Kauai Flooding Update

Following the weekend flooding, the Hanalei District – including Wainiha and Haena, faced heavy damage. The Hanalei River became swollen, and many neighborhoods and farmlands flooded. Emergency rescue crews evacuated 152 people by helicopter, 121 by bus and others by water. Currently, it is an active search and rescue effort.

2018 National Health Security Preparedness Index

A new emergency readiness report was released today that ranks states across the country. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that Hawaii fell short of the national average but overall did make good progress since the last review. The report looked at six areas and out of those areas, Hawaii ranked higher in healthcare delivery than other states.

Civil Beat Reality Check

Hawaii lawmakers are looking to expand the definition of drugged driving and keep driving under the influence of marijuana illegal. The expansion of drugged driving could add kava to the list of substance that could cause impaired driving.

Electric Buses

A new type of bus has hit the streets of Oahu, and it is electric. The state is trying out various types and brands, and this month, the second type of electric bus was tested on the island. The state will test another, different version at the airport terminal.
