Digital Media’s Effect on the Election: Joshua Benton

Josh Benton, Director of the Nieman Journalism Lab, predicted in March that journalists may lose touch with large parts of the country.

In the years since traditional journalism was overtaken by digital media, the number of journalists employed by newsrooms has dramatically fallen. According to the Pew Research Center, in the decade from 2004 to 2014, newsroom jobs decreased from 54 thousand to just under 33 thousand.  But the digital migration also brought the ability of journalists to write from anywhere and be read everywhere. But how journalists can accurately cover and understand places far from where they write has come under fire...including from election coverage.  Joshua Benton is director of the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University.

In spite of our efforts to think beyond what we see most of us judge people, to some degree, by how they look, and few stories emphasize that more than that of Joseph Merrick, a real-life nineteenth-century man whose terrible illness made him into a freak show attraction.  He was, of course, the Elephant Man, the subject of one of the most powerful dramas of recent decades, a man who was taken from the carnival midway to London’s elegant drawing rooms, only to be reminded that he would forever be thought of as a freak. Paul Mitri plays the part of Merrick in the Manoa Valley Theater production of the Elephant Man,

A week after the election of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States, much of the country remains in convulsions. Protestors in big cities rejected Trump as "not my president", police reported a wave of attacks on minorities, gays and women, the Democratic Party is reeling in self-criticism while the President-elect is now sending conflicting signals on the extent of the changes we'll see in his administration.

French popular music has an atmosphere all its own -- one that’s not easily conveyed unless you have a thorough grounding in the music, and accordions and violins with which to play it.  Those are not problems for Pierre Grill and Duane Padilla, who perform as Escargot, and are determined to keep that uniquely Gallic spirit alive.
