Whether to expand the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument is pitting conservationists against longline fishers and the contentious issue is also...dividing those who have fish on their menu. On Friday we spoke with a chef who stands with the Fishing Means Food coalition and in staunch opposition to the expansion. Today, we hear a counter perspective. From Chef Sam Choy. We talked earlier about why for him, the expansion comes down to respect for Hawaiian values.

American moviegoers have been under the spell of Japanese cinema for decades, whether they know it or not. Generations of American directors, not least of them Coppola, Lucas, and Spielberg, have lifted stories and techniques from the Japanese masters and attempted to make them their own. Victor Kobayashi is an emeritus professor at UH Manoa who’s a lifelong movie buff; he’s teaching a class in Japanese cinema for the UH Outreach College, and he’s with us this morning.

As the rest of the country shifts to general election politics, Hawaii’s late summer primary is still to come. The Saturday August 13 primary will set many of the matches for the general election and may answer some contests outright. That could include Honolulu’s race for mayor. Today we start our series of extended conversations with the top three candidates and we begin with former Honolulu mayor and former city prosecutor, Peter Carlisle.
