County Check-In: Mayor Kirk Caldwell
Mayors and city councils often have disagreements and what happens during and afterward can sometimes be seen as the mechanism for creating better outcomes. This week, the Honolulu City Council overrode Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s veto of a subsidy bill which would give recyclers - including Oregon-based Schnitzer Steel- up to $600,000 annually to use the City’s disposal facilities. And the City Council isn’t amenable to the Mayor’s budget request to increase staff to handle housing and help for homeless people. So are these cases of hammering out better outcomes?

FCC’s Proposed Privacy Rules: Katharina Kopp
The idea that by simply going online, you could be leaving a traceable trail isn’t new but what has made recent news is the Federal Communication Commission’s proposed rules to better safeguard your online privacy. Internet providers don't like them - and that may be a good sign that the rules could be effective at better preventing some surreptitious cookie data mining. KatharinaKopp, Director of the Washington D.C.-based Privacy & Data Project at the Center for Democracy & Technology, detailed what the rules would cover. Donkey Mill, Spring Art Experience: Artist teacher Casey Judy
Casey Judy is an artist who says her time in Hawaii has taught her to see things the way an artist sees things and for her, “seeing” can be expressed in a wide variety of media. It’s an open-ended approach that works well with young children, and she’s putting together a workshop in printmaking for them at the Donkey Mill Art Center.
