Depending on your perspective, today’s politics can seem toxic and depressing. And then there are surveys saying fewer than 1/5 of Americans think government always or usually does a good job. But, what may be more important and more optimistic, is the 55% who feel that the average person could do a better job than the government can. That could be a half-empty response: Politicians are so bad that anyone could do better. For today, contributing editor Neal Milner looks at the half full research about communities where people power is working.

Cajun music couldn’t have happened anywhere except Southern Louisiana, reflecting as it does the migration to that part of the country of a people determined to keep their culture alive. It’s a determination that has been passed along to fiddler, music producer, and bandleader Joel Savoy, who’s in Hawaii for a couple of shows with a country, Cajun, string-band fusion. Fiddler Joel Savoy is a nine-time GRAMMY nominee, as well as a two-time winner of the Cajun French Music Association’s Fiddler of the Year Award. His old-time cajun string band will perform at Honoka’a People’s Theater on Hawaii Island this Friday evening, 03/05 and Sunday at Hawaiian Brian’s in Honolulu, 03/07.

Update on Gas prices and effect on EV car sales: Dave Rolf
This morning when you walked to your car or truck, perhaps a relatively new vehicle greeted you. If so you’re among the legions of Americans who purchased a car or truck in the last year or especially in the last month. According to industry analysts, Edmunds.com, US sales are expected to show the highest February level in 16 years. In Hawaii, sales aren't too shabby either which is good news for most of Hawaii’s dealerships and pretty close to what Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association executive director Dave Rolf predicted the last time we talked in 2014.

King Kekaulike HS Band Program: Casey Nagata
If you’re a parent, count yourself lucky if your school has an active music program. Chances are, you’ll see in your child’s face the changes participation in “Band” or “Orchestra” can bring about in areas far beyond music. A lot of that teamwork and camaraderie will be on display tomorrow evening, 03/03 in Upcountry Maui, when ensembles from several Maui schools will converge on the 5th Annual Upcountry Music Festival in Pukalani. Casey Nagata is the Band Director at King Kekaulike High school in Pukalani, Maui. The 5th Annual Upcountry Music Festival includes the ensembles of the Na Ali'i Big Band, the KSM Jazz Rock Ensemble, the S. E. Kalama Intermediate Concert Band, the Kamehameha Schools Maui Concert Band, the Seabury Hall Concert Band, and the King Kekaulike High School Wind Ensemble. It’s a free event.
