Mind/Game - Mental Illness Film: Rick Goldsmith
Chances are someone in your personal or work life deals with it. It is mental illness. According to the national Institute of Mental Health, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness in a given year. That’s 43.8 million people, or 18.5% of our national population in all walks of life. The prevalence of mental illness may seem inconsistent with the stigma that still persists and it’s why some are approaching education and policy change through the medium of film. Producer/Director Rick Goldsmith’s latest film Mind/Game focuses on mental illness. He’s on the phone now. Rick Goldsmith is a longtime filmmaker and two-time Academy-Award-nominee. His documentary films address social issues, and have been broadcast nationwide and internationally. They are also used in high schools, colleges, universities, and by US and international activist and community organizations. His latest is Mind/Game: The Unquiet Journey of Chamique Holdsclaw.

Classical Guitarist: Luke Trimble
The guitar is an ideal instrument for chamber music, where the sound of acoustic instruments, heard without amplification, can be savored. Luke Trimble will be bringing his guitar, along with an ensemble of chamber players from the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra, to an ideal acoustical environment in a concert of chamber music written to highlight the classical guitar’s unique sonorities. They will be performing this Saturday evening, March 5th and on Sunday, March 6th, at 4:00 p.m. It will include Luigi Boccherini’sQuintet for Guitar & Strings No. 4 in D major, along with music for guitar and violin by Astor Piazzolla, Hector Villa-Lobos, Terry Riley, and NiccolóPaganini, as well as new music for guitar and cello by Bryan Johanson.

Social Effects of Mobile Communications: Scott Campbell
Maybe you’re like a lot of people who feel incomplete, maybe even a little naked without their mobile phone. With the record level of mobile communication we can be in touch all day every day. But who or what exactly are we in touch with? University of Michigan Professor Scott Campbell studies that question and other consequences of our mobile behavior. He teaches telecommunications and communication studies at the University of Michigan and this week is speaking at Oahu university campuses, including free public lecture today, February 29th at 4:30pm at UH Hamilton Library, and Wednesday, March 2nd at 5:30pm at HPU’s Aloha Tower Marketplace, Multipurpose Room 2.

Temple Emanu-El Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival: Andrea Snyder
The Jewish experience carries with it lessons for us all as a people without a homeland until the middle of the twentieth century, Jews have established a presence in every quarter of the world, as each year’s Temple Emanu-El Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival reminds us. Jewish cinema is as diverse in its subject matter as it is in its countries of origin. Andrea Snyder was part of the committee that selected this year’s slate of films. The 14th Annual Temple Emanu-El Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival runs from March 5-18, with additional screenings through March 29th at the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theater.
