Shifting Climate Patterns Threatening Native Silverswords: Dr. Paul Krushelnycky
A beautiful plant found only on Haleakala may become rarer. A recent study coauthored by UH researcher Paul Krushelnycky shows changing climate patterns allowing fog and rain to reach higher elevations are threatening the plant but he cautions all is not lost. He joined us in our studio to tell us more. Paul is currently Assistant Researcher, at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawaii in Manoa.

HTY’s “The Tiny Tree”: Annie Cusick Wood
Very young trees look so fragile, it’s hard to believe they’ll grow up to be so tall and sturdy but they do if they are properly cared for. Very young children must wonder, as they look at the tall trees how they’re ever going to reach those heights. Annie Cusick Wood is a playwright with a special gift for knowing what small children think and feel and what holds their attention in a darkened theater. Her new play, The Tiny Tree, is a new Honolulu Theatre for Youth production. It’s written for children as young as three years old, and she was able to join us in the studio. The Tiny Tree opens this weekend and runs through March 5th at Tenney Theatre in Downtown Honolulu.

HB1937, School Psychologists: Dr. Alex Bivens
Most parents want to feel confident that the people who teach their kids or who weigh in on their wellbeing are professionals. But in the case of school psychologists, does that mean they have to be licensed? That’s a question a measure passed by the state House education committee looked to answer as we went into the weekend. The bill has already passed the health committee. And now as one more committee referral has yet to weigh in, the question is dividing psychologists. Dr. Alex Bivens of the Hawaii Psychological Association (HAP) joined us on the phone. Dr. Alex Bivens is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been working in school based behavioral health for the past 16 years. He is the director of training for the school based behavioral health program on Kauai where he works with clinical and school psychologists, and other school based behavioral health workers.
Hawaii Association of School Psychologists’ input: Dr. Troy Loker
As we’ve heard, not all psychologists agree when it comes to the specific licensure of school psychologists, one group not on the fence is the Hawaii Association of School Psychologists (HASP). Honolulu District school psychologist Dr. Troy Loker joined us on the phone to add more this conversation. Dr. Loker is a school psychologist now with the Honolulu District of Hawaii's Department of Education. Prior to his recent move to Hawai’i, Dr. Loker also served as the 2014-2015 President of the Florida Association of School Psychologists. He has co-authored research articles, including publications in the Journal of Applied School Psychology, Applied Quality of Life, and School Mental Health.

Kids in West Kauai take their paniolo roots seriously; you can see that in the enthusiasm, and the skill, that they bring to rodeo events. When they compete in Team Roping, Barrel Racing, Bronco Riding, Bull Riding, Paniolo Po’owalu and Double Mugging, they’re exercising skills that have been in their families for generations. Kevin Blackstad is the coordinator of Waimea Roundup 2016, this Friday, 2/20 and Saturday, 2/21, and he was able to join us on the phone. Waimea Roundup 2016, will take place at Friendship Do Ranch at the Old Waimea Dairy site in Waimea, Kauai. It is put on by the Kauai Keiki & High School Rodeo Association.
