Medical Marijuana and Dispensary Bills: Dr. Sue Sisley
Dr. Sue Sisley is president of Scottsdale Research Institute and is medical director of Manoa Botanicals, which is one of the applicants for a medical marijuana dispensary license. She is the principal investigator for the only FDA-approved research using whole-plant medical cannabis, which studies the beneficial use of cannabis for combat veterans with PTSD. Dr. Sisley will be holding an information session for the general public at the Moiliili Community Center on Saturday, February 27th.

Polo was all over in Hawaii in the Eighties and early Nineties, and has been around since the 1800’s… and although it has died down from time to time, it has never gone away. Paula Beamer is the vice president of Hawaii Island’s Mauna Kea Polo Club and she was one of Hawaii’s first female polo players. She joined The Conversation to tell us about the sport of kings. The Mauna Kea Polo Club’s season runs from October to December and it holds its matches at Waikii Ranch Polo Field in Kamuela.

Charter School Bills: Tom Hutton
According to Uncommon Schools, a network of inner city charter schools in seven east coast cities, “a charter school is an independently run public school granted greater flexibility in its operations, in return for greater accountability for performance.” In Hawai‘i it’s that last part which has frustrated both the schools, and the commission created in the overhaul of charter schools three years ago. This week, the state public charter school commission’s executive director, Tom Hutton announced he would resign. And while the timeline for his departure isn’t yet public, the commission’s stance on charter school bills moving at the legislature is.

Hawai‘i Mural Arts: Mishel Narvaez
To paint a mural, an artist needs a pretty clear idea of what the finished product will look like and a fairly accurate sense of scale, among other skills. That large-scale canvas demands a focused approach, so imagine keeping that focus and creating a finished product within a twenty-four hour time period, all the while making a video time-lapse record of the entire process. That’s what Maui-based muralist Mishel Narvaez is cooking up for a Valentine’s Day happening. She’s coordinating the Hawaii Mural Arts HI-WALL EXHIBITION - "Go Big or Go Home." It takes place all day Sunday at One Love Market & Aloha Cafe in Paia, Maui. Muralists will have the full day to complete 1 mural on canvas that is time lapsed from start to finish. Each time-lapse photo of the final design, along with an artist bio, will be presented online for voting to begin the day after all of the murals are completed.
