You might not immediately link Hawaii and aerospace, but Hawai'i’s Aerospace Caucus would have you think otherwise... particularly about the mission and programs of the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems on Hawaii Island. It’s the centerpiece of the agenda for the Aerospace Caucus. Senator Glenn Wakai is one of the co-chairs and we sat down after news broke that the Kona airport museum honoring Hawaii astronaut Ellison Onizuka would close in March.

Something has been lost in the arts since the days when students apprenticed themselves to masters of technique and spent their entire lives honing their skills at the easel or the potter’s wheel. Patti Pease Johnson works in a variety of media and passes along the skills she has gained as a successful self-taught artist because she knows how technique can liberate the imagination.  Johnson teaches art workshops in three mediums: liquid dye on silk, soft pastel, and watercolor at various locations around Hawaii Island. She has home and fashion accessory lines in galleries and gift shops around the state and her original paintings are found in many international collections.

The rise of the blogger and the expansion of social media has brought with it an increase in the sheer number of words we’re given to read without necessarily giving us more in the way of good writing. On the positive side, it’s refreshing to find that more and more of us are being moved to express ourselves through the written word and a seasoned author and writing coach like Tom Peek, a novelist who lives on Hawaii Island, wants to help newly minted writers find that distinctive voice within. Peek is the author of Daughters of Fire, and a longtime writing coach. He’ll give a workshop called Writing on the Wild Side on Saturday, January 23rd, at the Volcano Art Center.
