Summer seems a long time ago, and with it some scary moments in hurricane season... which according to the calendar is now at an end. Regardless of the weather, Honolulu’s Chinatown’s businesses and residents deal with community safety issues and have been telling their troubles to the City. The draft plan to address some of them came out of a meeting last June. Tonight, the Chinatown community will take another run at it. In advance of that gathering, Community Building and Transit Oriented Development Administrator Harrison Rue joined The Conversation to provide an update on the situation. The Chinatown meeting happens tonight at 6 p.m. in meeting room 3 at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Frank Sinatra is the most influential American popular singer. A unique artist who created his own way of communicating a song and projecting an intimacy that brought his listeners closer and persuaded millions he was singing only to them. Guy Steele has studied, and loved, the vast Sinatra archive, and somehow manages to find gems no one else has heard.  He’ll be bringing those to our HPR airwaves next week in a special centennial edition of his show Sinatra: The Man and the Music. The show airs on Sunday afternoons on HPR 2 and a special three hour Birthday Edition airs on Saturday, December 12th from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.

As you heard earlier on the news, President Obama wrapped up his visit to Paris and the UN Conference on Climate Change today. At a news conference, he told reporters that he believes negotiators can reach a deal to contain the increase in global warming and on his last day, he also met with leaders of small island states, who are among the most vulnerable to climate change. News Analyst Neal Conan is a regular contributor to HPR with the Pacific News Minute and he joined the show from Paris, France to comment.

One of the most encouraging signs in today’s world of popular music is the way it encourages original creation: if you’re determined to forge a very personal style, you’re persistent in reaching out to the public and, most importantly, if you have something to say, there’s an audience out there for you. Singer, instrumentalist, and songwriter Rachael Yamagata has put a great deal of touring, recording, and song-crafting behind her already, and she continues to find ways  to keep her music fresh. Rachael Yamagata and her trio will perform tomorrow evening (12/2) at the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theater.
