Stormwater Management Program Plan: Dr. Roger Babcock
Every five years, Honolulu is required to update its stormwater management program plan. The current draft is up for public comment until December 11th. But working through the 174 page plan, or even the executive summary, requires a cheat sheet just to remember the acronyms. We called Roger Babcock, the Director of the Statewide Wastewater Operator Training Center, for a little help in navigating the plan’s update.

Ukulele Guild of Hawaii's Annual Exhibition: David Lawrence
Like almost all musical instruments in use today, the ukulele is the product of an ongoing evolution, as it travels around the world and adapts to the music, and the available tonewoods, of each new home. The members of the ukulele Guild of Hawaii are at the leading edge of instrument design in both looks and sound production and each year’s annual exhibition brings forth the best work being done in the islands, from people who know that making an instrument is at least as difficult as playing one. David Lawrence is a Boardmember and Treasurer for the Guild and he joined The Conversation in our studios to talk about the annual exhibition, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday at the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel.

Ohia Wilt Disease: Christy Martin
Once again, Hawaii Island is being hit with double doses of bad news… escalating dengue fever cases on the West side, and in East Hawaii, a quickly spreading threat to ohia trees. Since the announcement about fungus hit the news in late summer it has been steadily on the move. The big problem is that it’s a new strain and it’s claiming ohia trees at an alarming rate. Christy Martin is the public information officer for the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species. We talked with her to get an update and ask her what’s missing from the ongoing conversation. Star of the Sea Middle Schoolers’ Prosthetic Hands Project: Aaron Marsh
The human body is vastly more complex than any machine, but advances in mechanics have allowed us to emulate nature in important ways and create prosthetic limbs with the help of innovative technologies. Aaron Marsh is an aircraft mechanic who teaches middle schoolers at Star of the Sea School how to make prosthetic hands and fingers… combining practical skills with a compassionate effort.
