Hawaii Fashion Month: Bobby Ikeda

November is Hawaii Fashion Month and it’s the third time out of the gate for the state initiative and project of the Hawaii Fashion Incubator. Since its inception one of the big questions is just how a home grown fashion industry can expand given Hawaii’s resources. Manufacturing in Hawaii is one of the key questions and its one Bobby Ikeda is considering. He was born into the garment world in Hawaii and later his family moved production to California. Now he’d like to bring some of it back. Ikeda is the CEO of the Circle Group Inc., a company that specializes in brand strategy, strategic marketing, concept and product development, and manufacturing. The company also produces two brands of its own. He’s a panelist and mentor for the Hawai’i Fashion Exchange, and will be part of HIFI Connects: The Business of HI Fashion tonight at the Honolulu Design Center.

UHM Kennedy Theatre’s Gorilla: Mark Branner

Childhood is a time when magic is real and anything is possible, and we can spend the rest of our lives trying to recreate those early years.  Theatre can be a wonderful vehicle for bringing the magic back, as an upcoming production of the play Gorilla by the Theatre for Young Audiences at UH Manoa sets out to remind us.  In the play, which is based on a popular children’s book, a bright and curious young girl gets a chance to explore the world in the company of a large hairy beast, and it all seems quite natural.  Mark Branner is directing the production, and he joined The Conversation to tell us more about it. Performances will be December 12th and 13th and December 19th in the UHM Art Building’s Commons Gallery.

Farming Outside the Box: Anna Peach

Anna Peach

Anna Peach has been called a renegade farmer… her methods are unconventional, but they work.  She built her Hawaii Island squash farm up from the ground on a quarter-acre, and surprised everyone with what she was able to produce. Part of her education came from the growing urban farming movement, and a lot of it came from her Wisconsin family, which has been farming for seven generations.   She’s in town to give a free talk tonight called Farming Outside the Box at Patagonia Haleiwa.
