Housing Planning Study: James Dannemiller
Every five years, Hawaii gets a snapshot of the state’s current and future housing needs for different populations. That includes average families, and HUD income groups like the elderly, special needs, and homeless people. The assessment is the basis for an inventory and projection of long and short term supply and demand. Once again, SMS Research is conducting a three month phone survey beginning this month with The Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation. SMS conducted the Hawai‘i Housing Planning Study in 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2011, but will this year’s survey actually result in tangible gains in the middle and low income affordable housing categories… or will it be one more measure of Hawaii’s inability to keep up? Jim Dannemiller is President of SMS Research & Marketing Services and he joined The Conversation to talk about the study.

Rainforest Puuhonua Book: Kahikahealani Wight
A pu’uhonua is a place of refuge, where past wounds can heal and it’s also a place of starting over and transformation. For Kahikahealini Wight, that place was Volcano Village on Hawaii Island. Her five years there were a time to reconnect with her heritage as a Native Hawaiian, with the abundant natural life of the rainforest to guide her. Her memoir of that time, Rainforest Pu’uhonua, is filled with images of a still-untouched Hawaii. She’ll be reading from her work this Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. at Native Books/N? Mea Hawai‘i in Honolulu’s Ward Warehouse and the following Saturday at noon at the Queen Emma Summer Palace.

Limiting Sea Cucumber Harvest: Alton Miyasaka
They are not pretty to look at and maybe might make a good Halloween costume… but the state is hoping there will be more of them. The creatures in question are sea cucumbers. Months ago, a https://vimeo.com/131933123">mysterious harvest of large quantities of sea cucumbers led the state to put a 120 day ban in place pending public hearings on permanent rules. Those hearings begin November 9th. Alton Miyasaka is with the Division of Aquatic Resources and is the lead biologist for the sea cucumber regulations that will be heard next month. Miyasaka has been with the Division of Aquatic Resources since 1980 with current duties in the areas of regulations, legislation, and marine fisheries.

Dia De Los Muertos: Silvia Jaimes
As Halloween gets ever more gruesome, we’re thinking about another day, coming up in just a few, that celebrates the macabre… at least that’s how it seems on the surface. But El Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is more complicated than that. For Honolulu Waldorf School Spanish instructor Silvia Jaimes, a native of El Salvador, it’s a day to honor those gone by and celebrate the things they loved. She’ll be marking the occasion by asking her seventh and eighth grade students to come to school in traditional costumes. She joined the show in our studios to tell us more about El Dia De Los Muertos.
