Gun Safety and Recent BB Gun Shootings: Dr. Maxwell Cooper
A BB gun may have gained fame as part of the classic film A Christmas story, but lately stories of many bb gun shootings in Hawaii are not so benign. In the past weeks, a spate of injuries to teens, a dog, and property caused by BB gun shooters is bringing questions of gun safety, accessibility, and Hawaii law. Dr. Maxwell Cooper is the Legislative Liaison for the Hawaii Rifle Association and he joined the show via phone to comment. He is also a retired plastic surgeon US Army COL, past President of the Hawaii Rifle Association, and an NRA Firearms Safety Instructor.

UHM Shakespeare Master Classes: Gary Logan
Four centuries along, Shakespeare remains the most resilient of playwrights and his work can be interpreted any number of ways without losing its meaning. But successful interpretations depend on a thorough understanding of the playwright’s intention and of his language. Gary Logan is the director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy for Classical Acting in Washington, D.C., and he’s in Hawai‘i for a series of master classes at the University of Hawaii. A free public workshop takes place at UH Manoa on Saturday and the subject is Scansion Dynamics and Persuasion. It runs from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre at Kennedy Theatre.

EPA Region 9 Enforcement Division Director: Kathleen Johnson
Hawaii is well known for its use of cesspools and over the past several years there have been conversations about how to help individual homeowners. Meanwhile owners of many commercial properties with large capacity cesspools must notify the EPA about their facilities. The EPA is responsible for implementing the regulations to ensure the properties are in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Region 9 Enforcement Division Director, Kathleen Johnson, is in Hawaii to close the case on several properties and she joined The Conversation to tell us more about the EPA’s efforts.
