Kailua Kalaheo Hillside: Matt Darnell
In 1961, plans for growth in Windward Oahu included an elementary school on a 10 acre property in Kailua. 54 years later, no such school exists and the city’s responsibility for school building has long since been transferred to the State’s Department of Education. Not needing a school, the city would like to sell the property in a closed bid sale with a mimimum price of 10 million dollars. That’s not sitting well with residents who say they have their own ideas for the lot. The community will get a first chance to share them at a meeting on October 20. Matt Darnell is the president of the Kalaheo Hillside Residents Association and he joined the show via phone to comment.

National Poetry Recitation Contest: Emma Stewart
The explosion of slam poetry as a performance art in the last couple of decades has reminded the world of what poets have known all along… that their art is meant to be presented out loud, with its rhythms, word choices, and meaning given their full due. The statewide Poetry Out Loud competition encourages an appreciation of poetry as performance, as Punahou senior Emma Stewart knows full well. She’s the 2013 winner of the competition, which is looking for entrants now. Honolulu Theatre for Youth and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts invite high school students from across the state to compete in the 2015-16 Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest, presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The deadline to register is December 19.

Later today, democratic presidential candidates will take the stage in Las Vegas for their first debate. Hillary Clinton will be in the center of the pack with Bernie Sanders and Jim Webb to her right, and Martin O’Malley and Lincoln Chaffee to her left. The Democratic debate comes after two Republican Presidential debates with record audience numbers and plenty of political fireworks. News analyst Neal Conan will be watching from his Mac nut farm on the Big Island, but before then he joined the show to share his thoughts on how the debate will play out.
