Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest: Elaine Rose
It's likely discussions of fetal tissue probably weren't part of your conversation a year ago. But over the past few months, those two words continue to crop up in conversations from Congress to the corner coffee shops. Still at the heart of them are the videos, materials, and information secretly acquired by the Center for Medical Progress to make a case against Planned Parenthood and abortion. Elaine Rose is the CEO of Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii. That's the advocacy arm of the reproductive health organization. She's in Hawai‘i following the latest round of lobbying in DC and she joined the show in our studio to comment.

Dance Maui 2015: Nicole Humphrey
Every culture has its own form of dance. It’s a fundamental expression of culture that has, inevitably, taken on untold numbers of different forms. Dance performances tend to focus on these styles in isolation, and opportunities to see wide varieties of dance within a single performance are all too rare. Maui’s Adaptation Dance Theater has taken a different approach. They bring together classical ballet, Indian Dance, and flamenco for Dance Maui 2015, Maui’s first festival of its kind. Nicole Humphrey of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center is putting it all together, and she joined the show via phone to talk about it. The festival runs from 2 to 5 p.m. next Saturday, October 17th at the Keopuolani Regional Park Amphitheater.

Recent Increase In Health Insurance Rates: Gordon Ito
Hawaii has some of the lowest health insurance rates in the country, but for the 34,000 individuals who will see their rates escalate in double digit percentage points, low rates are relative. Last week the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Insurance Division gave its blessing to rate hikes for individuals. Kaiser Permanente’s rate will increase by 34.4 %; HMSA’s by 27.3 %. State insurance commissioner, Gordon Ito joined the show to look at what this means for individuals who will be looking for plans when open enrollment begins in November. Open enrollment for insurance for next year begins Nov. 1st and anyone who previously purchased insurance through the Hawaii Health Connector must re-enroll through the federal website, healthcare.gov.

Sunday in the Park with George: Paul Mitri
The Painter George Seurat spent two years on his masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, working and re-working his images out of tiny dots of color. His meticulous approach became the inspiration, more than a century later, for Stephen Sondheim’s musical play Sunday in the Park With George. It’s a story of an artist’s obsession and the ways art and life can collide, and it’s coming to the University of Hawaii’s Kennedy Theater in a production directed by Paul Mitri, who joined the show in our studio. The show opens October 23rd and runs until the 31st on the Mainstage at Kennedy Theatre.
