Shelter of Wisdom: Carolina Jesus
Most of the focus on homeless people these days surrounds state and city efforts, outreach workers, and service providers. For almost a decade, though, one Honolulu woman has believed that it was her job to offer help to homeless people unable to find housing. Carolina Jesus first opened her home to a few people, and later formed the nonprofit Shelter of Wisdom. She grew it to run six houses with truly affordable rents - often just a few hundred dollars a month. She has created a self-funding model requiring no employees and no government assistance or grants. Shelter of Wisdom now houses 63 men in 6 homes in Honolulu. Approximately 200 formerly homeless men and women have come through her doors and now live in permanent housing. In answering our question from earlier this week, whose responsibility is it to care for homeless people, Carolina Jesus believes its hers… and ours.

Edith Piaf sang songs of love and loss to wartime French audiences that knew her life was every bit as tragic as her songs, and she rose to international fame during the Second World War when France was under German occupation. To this day, her music evokes the spirit of her country as few other singers’ music can, and its being celebrated in this year by L’Escargot, a cabaret and jazz trio that features singer Mimi Hafele, Pierre Grill on piano and accordion, and violinist Duane Padilla. Their show Soiree Edith Piaf takes place next Friday at the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theater.

Environmental Council - Annual Strategic Planning Session: Joseph Shacat
Next week the state’s environmental council will meet for its annual strategic planning session. In April, the group put out its report including three priorities for the state: climate change, invasive species, and the 2016 World Conservation Congress to be held in Hawaii sponsored by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Also in the report was a vision of a department of sustainability. Throughout the report is a measurement called the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) for Hawaii and according to the Council, it accounts for the economic impacts on society including environmental factors. How the measurement may be reflected in the agenda for the coming meeting was the subject of our conversation with Environmental Council Chair, Joseph Shacat.

Aotearoa New Zealand Film Festival 2015: Leo Koziol
New Zealand cinema is in a twenty-year growth spurt of sorts, as the international success of a couple of films has generated opportunities for dozens of others. Some of the results will be on view starting this weekend at the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Aotearoa Film Festival… and as one of its curators, Leo Koziol, told us, the story of New Zealand’s indigenous people has always been at the heart of its cinema.
