No one needs to tell you it’s really hot. Nor does anyone need to tell kids and teachers in sweltering classrooms. Stories of kids fatigued and dehydrated pepper the news and earlier this month a teacher took herself to the ER. Parents have been trying to help the situation by donating fans or AC units and the Department of Education even has a policy for that, though the electrical capacity of each school may thwart the thoughtful actions. At 9 AM this morning and again at 3 PM, the Cool Our Keiki Facebook group is holding a rally to support students and teachers. Although he applauds all the community support, Hawaii State Teachers Association President Corey Rosenlee says it isn’t a long-term solution.

Golden Moment Hawaii Ice Skating Concert: Kristi Yamaguchi
Figure skaters operate in a unique world at the intersection of art and athletics. They train as athletes for competitive events, but those difficult maneuvers are more than stunts… they’re a form of self-expression that has to merge seamlessly with its musical accompaniment. Olympic Gold Medalist Kristi Yamaguchi is bringing what she calls a “Skating concert on ice” to town, with fellow Olympic Gold Medalist Brian Boitano. They will be the headline attractions at Golden Moment Hawaii, which will benefit early childhood literacy in Hawaii, a project of her Always Dream Foundation. The show takes place November 20th and 21st in the Blaisdell Arena.

The 2015-2016 school year started without Halau Lokai public charter school. Earlier this year, the state’s Public Charter School Commission voted to close it after well publicized problems with debt. Next year, school will start without several would-be charter schools whose applications were recently denied. Today, the Commission will hold its general meeting to take action on the process for the next crop of applicants, consider the criteria for charter contracts, and review the fourth quarter financials for current charter schools. Tom Hutton is the Executive Director of the State Public Charter School Commission and he joined the show via phone to tell us more about the process.

Finding the Wayfinder: Greg Trifonovitch
Most of us know some part of the story of the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s historic voyages and how they have revived the ancient ways of the Polynesian navigators, who were able to find their way around the Pacific with incredible precision, but few of us know the full story of how those voyages came about. As the East-West Center celebrates its 55th year, former staffer Gregg Trifonovich looks back on the Center’s role in bringing the way of the wayfinder to Hawaii.
